Fique
is a fiber grown in tropical regions, once used to elaborate ropes,
ties, packing material and cages for animals. Once synthetic fibers
became popular, artesans who labored with fique lost a large part
of their market and had to look for new, innovative ways to use this
material and maintain tradition. Eliabeth Murillo, the talented designer
of this new line of necklaces, has succesfully maintained the integrity
of a Colombian tradition -- working with natural fibers -- with the
needs of a modern market. She has combined design with tradition --
the perfect marriage. Her pieces have graced the runways of Milan,
Italy, and Colombia Moda in Medellin. Moreover, her company reaches
out to marginalized communities and employs displaced families --
families who have had to leave their homes because of violence in
the Colombian countryside.
