Only found in Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, Colombia is the biggest exporter of tagua nut in the world. tagua nut comes from palm trees. For over two-hundred years, ivory nut (tagua) has been used in the production of buttons, cane handles, pipes, chess pieces and more. In fact, in the past, some artesans passed it off as elephant ivory -- as it's virtually impossible to tell the difference. As plastic and synthetic materials took a more prominent position in the market, the use of tagua nut waned. Now, though, it's making a comeback, as it's a fantastic, malleable, attractive material and one that we can wear knowing we're taking care of the environment.
